As injured muscles heal they can become tight with the scar tissue which covers the underlying softer fibres.
Whilst this scar tissue is protective, it reduces flexibility and ultimately contributes to the gaining of further movement-inhibiting fibres. Check out this video to see how this works - see from 1m58 secs onwards.
The result is you never fully recover from your injuries and become caught in a spiral of increasingly restricted movement.
The stretching in Hot Power Yoga practice allows the scar tissue to be gently broken down and so promotes flexibility during injury rehabilitation. Bringing movement to the site of the injury also increases blood flow which aids healing by bringing nutrients to the injury site as well as helping remove toxins.
The breathing style used throughout a Hot Power Yoga class heightens the oxygenation of the blood which further supports the healing of the injury.
Unlike some other yoga styles, Hot Power Yoga encourages you to work around your injuries rather than through them, which allows your practice to be prescriptive to your own needs. We see your alignment in poses as being very specific to your own body and we won’t force you into positions that don’t work for you.
The heat in a Hot Power Yoga class assists your body in being able to practice to a level that is beneficial. The heat releases joint and ligament tension and so reduces muscle pain. Yoga also naturally produces endorphins to aid pain relief.
Whilst Hot Power Yoga has helped many people recover from injury, we always recommend you seek the advice of your doctor or therapist before trying a new activity. We also suggest you speak with our Hot Power Yoga Adviser who will give you guidance on any modifications that will help your practice and poses you should avoid.
